Plateau: Suspected Militias Torch Houses After Troops Repel Attack on Manja Community

Suspected militias allegedly set several houses ablaze while retreating after troops repelled an attempted attack on Manja community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident occurred at about 4:45pm on Thursday, September 17, 2026, after troops of Sector 8, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), received intelligence about the movement of suspected militias towards the community.

Acting on the information, the troops moved to intercept the attackers. The suspected assailants reportedly opened fire after sighting the security personnel, prompting the troops to engage them.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the military response forced the attackers to withdraw towards the surrounding forest.

However, the assailants allegedly set some houses on the outskirts of the community on fire as they retreated. The extent of the damage was not immediately established.

The troops subsequently cleared the area and returned to their base, while efforts were made to assess the damage caused by the fires and determine whether other property had been affected.

Security personnel remained on alert around the community as investigations continued and efforts were made to track the fleeing suspects.

Zagazola Makama reported: “On sighting the troops, the assailants opened fire, prompting the troops to immediately engage them.”

No casualty figure was provided in the report, and the identities of those behind the alleged attack and arson had not been independently established.
