The Nigeria Police Force has warned politicians, political thugs and their supporters against destroying or defacing campaign posters, banners and billboards belonging to rival candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The warning was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, who described the destruction of political campaign materials as an act of intolerance.
The police cautioned that anyone found engaging in such activities would face arrest and prosecution, noting that the unlawful destruction or removal of campaign materials could constitute malicious damage under applicable laws.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has consequently directed commissioners of police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take preventive measures against further incidents.
The directives also include investigating reported cases and ensuring that individuals found responsible are prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Force extended the warning to political sponsors and individuals who recruit, encourage or finance such activities, stressing that they could also face prosecution if evidence establishes their involvement.
The police urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to respect the rights of opposing candidates and allow all political groups to conduct their campaigns without intimidation or destruction of campaign materials.
It also called on political actors to embrace tolerance and peaceful engagement as preparations gather momentum for the 2027 general elections.
