Portugal have confirmed the appointment of Jorge Jesus as the new head coach of the national team, bringing an end to speculation following Roberto Martínez’s departure after the country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
The Portuguese Football Federation announced the appointment in an official statement on Friday, just days after Portugal’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16 ended their World Cup journey.
Martínez stepped down after the tournament, explaining that his contract had expired at the conclusion of Portugal’s campaign.
Jesus, 71, takes over the national team with decades of coaching experience, having managed some of Portugal’s biggest clubs, including Benfica and Sporting CP.
The veteran coach arrives after leading Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr to the 2025-26 league title in his most recent managerial role.
His appointment also reunites him with Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who enjoyed an impressive spell under Jesus at Al-Nassr. Ronaldo scored 29 goals in 33 appearances while playing under the experienced coach last season.
The 41-year-old forward has already confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup was the final World Cup of his career, although he has not announced whether he intends to retire from international football.
With Jesus now in charge, Portugal will begin preparations for upcoming international competitions as the federation seeks to rebuild after its disappointing World Cup exit.
