Former Imo State Governor and Senator Rochas Okorocha has been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force and released on bail after about an hour of interrogation over allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation.

The arrest occurred on Monday night at REIZ Continental Hotel in central Abuja, according to a report by Channels Television.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, confirmed the arrest and subsequent release to the television station, saying Okorocha was asked to return to the Force Headquarters on Tuesday for further questioning.

The police are continuing their investigation into the allegations against the former governor. His release on bail does not amount to a determination of the allegations against him.

Police Summon Okorocha for Further Interrogation

Iniedu said Okorocha was expected to return to the Force Headquarters as investigators continued examining the allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation.

The former governor’s arrest reportedly followed his failure to honour earlier police invitations linked to the investigation.

According to the report, Okorocha was initially invited to appear at the Force Headquarters on September 2. The appointment was subsequently rescheduled to September 8 at the request of his lawyers.

He reportedly failed to attend on the rescheduled date, leading to further developments in the investigation.

The police have not been reported as announcing a final conclusion on the allegations, and further questioning is expected as the inquiry continues.

Okorocha, who served as governor of Imo State from 2011 to 2019, is a former senator and a prominent figure in Nigerian politics.
