President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of former lawmaker, businessman and prominent pro-democracy activist, Chief Ralph Obioha.
Tinubu expressed his condolences in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, describing Obioha as a patriot who made significant sacrifices during Nigeria’s struggle to restore democratic rule.
The President extended his sympathies to Obioha’s family, community, the people of Abia State, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, members of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and other Nigerians mourning his death.
Tinubu said Obioha belonged to a generation of Nigerians who answered the call to national duty during some of the most difficult periods in the country’s history.
The President particularly highlighted Obioha’s role as a founding member and prominent leader of NADECO, which campaigned for the restoration of democracy following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
According to Tinubu, Obioha’s commitment to the pro-democracy struggle came at considerable personal cost, but he remained firm in his belief in democracy, justice, constitutionalism and the right of Nigerians to choose their leaders.
“Chief Ralph Obioha was a courageous Nigerian who made sacrifices for democracy and remained committed to the ideals of a better Nigeria,” Tinubu said.
The President described Obioha’s death as a loss to his family, community and the country, adding that his courage, convictions and service would remain part of his legacy.
Tinubu prayed for comfort for the bereaved family and eternal rest for the late statesman, while urging Nigerians to remember the contributions of those who stood for democratic values during challenging periods in the nation’s history.
