Two Dead in Kano-Zaria Road Crash Involving Bitumen-Laden Truck

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano Sector Command, has confirmed the death of two persons in a road crash involving a bitumen-laden tipper truck and a Mercedes-Benz at Dangi Underpass along the Kano-Zaria Road.

The Sector Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday night, stating that the crash occurred at about 5:50 p.m.

According to the statement, the accident involved a Howo tipper truck with registration number RMG 332 XA and a Mercedes-Benz C180 with registration number ABJ 783 GB. Four adult men were involved in the crash, while two were confirmed dead.

The FRSC said preliminary findings indicated that brake failure in the fully loaded tipper truck caused the driver to lose control. The truck reportedly slid backwards and collided with the Mercedes-Benz travelling behind it, resulting in the fatal crash.

Rescue personnel from the FRSC and other emergency responders evacuated the victims to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for medical attention.

Reacting to the incident, the Kano Sector Commander, Corps Commander Idris Lawal, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the repose of their souls.

Lawal also warned motorists, transport unions, construction companies and fleet operators against neglecting routine vehicle maintenance, particularly the inspection and servicing of braking systems and tyres.

He urged drivers to practise defensive driving, maintain safe distances between vehicles, remain alert to changing road conditions and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before every journey.

The FRSC reiterated that regular vehicle maintenance, responsible driving and compliance with road safety regulations are essential to reducing preventable crashes. It called on all road users to take responsibility for their safety and that of other road users.
