Fresh violence has erupted in Plateau State after suspected bandits attacked a group of hunters in Riyom, leaving at least two people dead and another seriously injured.
The early morning attack occurred in Kum village, where the victims had reportedly travelled for hunting activities. Security sources say the incident adds to growing tensions in the area following earlier clashes involving local groups and herders.
Details of the attack were shared by security analyst Zagazola Makama, who said troops under Operation ENDURING PEACE responded to distress calls around 7:00 a.m. on April 23.
By the time security operatives arrived, two hunters—identified as Haruna Chiana and John Ranka—had been killed. A third victim, Markus Pam, sustained injuries and was rushed for medical treatment.
The victims were said to have come from Foron District in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, traveling to Riyom for hunting before they were ambushed.
Their bodies and the injured survivor were evacuated to the General Hospital in Riyom, while troops immediately launched a manhunt to track down those responsible for the attack.
The killings came just hours after reports that Berom youths allegedly attacked Fulani herders in the same area, rustling dozens of cattle—an incident believed to have heightened tensions and possibly triggered reprisal violence.
Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement, but the latest attack underscores the fragile security situation in parts of Plateau, where cycles of retaliation have continued to fuel instability.
