Real Madrid forward Vinícius Jr has called on referees to provide greater protection for attacking players, naming himself, Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal and Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez as players who need stronger protection on the pitch.

The Brazilian international expressed frustration over what he considers unfair treatment during matches, claiming that defenders can repeatedly foul him while he ends up receiving a booking from the referee.

According to football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano in a post on X on Thursday, Vinícius said: “I feel like defenders can always kick me, yet I am the one who gets booked.”

The Real Madrid star argued that referees should pay particular attention to protecting players capable of influencing matches through their individual quality and attacking contributions.

“I think we need to protect players who can make a difference like me, Lamine Yamal and Julián Álvarez,” he added.

Vinícius also questioned the severity of certain disciplinary sanctions, referring to a four-match suspension imposed for pulling an opponent’s hair. He said he could not recall another player receiving a similar punishment for that type of incident.

“I do not remember any player being banned for four games for pulling the opponent’s hair,” he said.

The forward also suggested that criticism from rival clubs and sections of the media had contributed to what he sees as inconsistent treatment of incidents involving him. His comments reflected his frustration with how disciplinary decisions and on-field confrontations are handled.

Reflecting on his career at Real Madrid, Vinícius reminded critics of the progress he had made since joining the Spanish club as an 18-year-old. He said he had faced doubts about his ability to score goals during his early years at the club.

“Remember, I arrived at 18 years old and many people laughed at me. They said I can’t score, then I had more than 100 goals for Madrid,” he stated.

The Brazilian pointed to his goalscoring record and the trophies he has won with Real Madrid as evidence of his development and contribution to the team.

He concluded with a defiant message to those who continue to doubt him, saying: “Vini always comes back, remember.”

His remarks have renewed attention on the debate over referee protection for attacking players, disciplinary consistency and the treatment of high-profile footballers during competitive matches.
