Twenty prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted in Imo State have regained their freedom after spending seven days in captivity.

The victims were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom when two buses were attacked along the Owerri-Onitsha Road near Umunoha on October 1.

The Nigeria Police Force said the 20 victims were rescued on Wednesday, October 7, at Amakohia Ubi Village in Imo State, following sustained search-and-rescue operations.

The operation involved the police, military and Department of State Services (DSS), with security agencies working together to locate the abducted corps members.

Following their rescue, the victims were taken for medical assessment and provided with the necessary care to address any health concerns arising from their time in captivity.

The NYSC Director-General also visited the rescued victims at the DSS facility in Owerri as authorities continued efforts to support their recovery.

Security agencies have meanwhile intensified efforts to identify and arrest those responsible for the abduction.

The rescue brings relief to the victims and their families, who had been waiting for updates since the attack, while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
