2027: Peter Obi Wants Nigerians to Set Campaign Agenda

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to play a greater role in determining the issues political parties campaign on ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi made the call at an NDC town-hall meeting in Kaduna, where he said politicians should engage directly with citizens and respond to their concerns instead of imposing predetermined policies and campaign promises.

The former Anambra State governor described his preferred approach as moving from “supply-driven” politics to “demand-driven” politics. He also cautioned against campaign promises that politicians may be unable to fulfil after assuming office.

Obi called for greater emphasis on issues affecting Nigerians rather than tribal and religious considerations. He said national discussions should focus on challenges such as insecurity, education, employment and economic opportunities.

On security, Obi said an NDC administration would make the issue a priority and seek to restore Nigerians’ confidence to travel across the country without fear. He said the current security situation had made ordinary movement between parts of Nigeria a source of concern for many citizens.

He also spoke about education and social mobility, saying his proposed administration would pursue policies aimed at ensuring children have access to education regardless of their family background. Obi said the broader goal would be to expand opportunities for Nigerians to improve their social and economic prospects.

The Kaduna engagement also featured NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, who spoke about issues including insecurity, job creation, education and agricultural development. Participants were given an opportunity to raise concerns and interact with the party’s presidential team.

The meeting formed part of the NDC’s ongoing town-hall engagements ahead of the 2027 elections, through which the party says it is seeking direct engagement with Nigerians on issues affecting communities and the country.
