Fresh political speculation has emerged ahead of the 2027 general elections after former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo paid a private visit to the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his residence in Kano State.

Obasanjo was received by Kwankwaso alongside the NDC governorship candidate in Kano State, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo. The meeting, which was held behind closed doors, has attracted attention amid ongoing discussions about possible opposition realignments ahead of the next presidential election.

Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, confirmed the visit in a statement, describing it as a cordial meeting marked by warm exchanges between the political figures. However, no details were provided about the issues discussed during the engagement.

The latest meeting adds to growing political interest surrounding the relationship between Obasanjo and key opposition figures as parties continue consultations ahead of the 2027 elections.

Kwankwaso and Obasanjo have maintained a longstanding political relationship dating back to the former president’s administration, during which Kwankwaso served as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence between 2003 and 2007.

Political observers have also linked the visit to ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation among opposition leaders seeking to build a formidable coalition before the next general election.

The development comes as the NDC’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is widely regarded as a close political ally of Obasanjo. The former president publicly endorsed Obi during the 2023 presidential election, a move that continues to fuel speculation about his role in shaping opposition politics.

Although neither Obasanjo nor Kwankwaso disclosed the purpose of Thursday’s meeting, the visit is expected to generate further debate over the evolving political landscape as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
