The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has warned against any attempt to manipulate votes from Northern Nigeria if voters in the region decide not to support President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.
Baba-Ahmed said Northern voters deserved respect and should be allowed to freely determine their political choices without intimidation, vote manipulation or attempts to influence their decisions through financial inducements.
In a statement he personally signed, the PRP chairman argued that the North would not allow its votes to be manipulated if residents decided to withdraw support from Tinubu’s administration. He also criticised what he described as the government’s failure to adequately address the region’s concerns.
“The problem is that they think they can pay people in the North to forget the humiliation and lack of care we’ve suffered under Tinubu’s rule,” Baba-Ahmed said.
He added that Northern voters would defend their dignity and ensure their voices were heard at the ballot box in 2027.
“We will show them that we are also citizens who deserve respect and our voices matter,” he stated.
Baba-Ahmed further warned that the outcome of the election must reflect the actual choices of voters, saying no one should attempt to alter the results if the North decides against supporting the APC or Tinubu.
“If we decide not to support the APC or Tinubu, no one should try to change the result of the election,” he said.
The PRP chairman’s comments come amid growing political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with political leaders and parties seeking to consolidate support across Nigeria’s regions.
However, some Northern political leaders have expressed confidence in Tinubu’s chances of securing substantial support from the region in the next election. Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani and Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf have both reportedly predicted strong Northern backing for the President in 2027.
The contrasting positions highlight the political contest unfolding in the North, a region that remains an important electoral battleground. As the election approaches, debates over governance, economic conditions, voter confidence and electoral integrity are expected to feature prominently in political discussions.
Baba-Ahmed’s statement reinforces his call for voters’ choices to be respected, regardless of which candidate or party emerges with the strongest support.
