Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has urged Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes to become more clinical in front of goal following the club’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road.
The former England international believes United created enough scoring opportunities to secure victory but failed to convert several of their chances during the Premier League encounter over the weekend.
Mbeumo gave Manchester United the lead in the 35th minute, but Leeds responded early in the second half when Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the equaliser six minutes after the restart.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, the former defender acknowledged Mbeumo’s contribution but argued that the forward could have added to his goal tally. He also called for greater attacking sharpness from the other players, including Cunha, who came on as a substitute in the 84th minute.
“And you know what as well? To add to that, we’ve got to become more clinical at finishing our chances,” Ferdinand said.
He continued: “And Mbeumo today, yes, gets the goal, but could have had a couple more. Cunha, when he comes on, I want to see more opportunities to take chances.”
Ferdinand also singled out Amad Diallo, insisting that the winger needed to improve his finishing, while noting that captain Bruno Fernandes should rediscover the clinical edge that has contributed to his performances in previous seasons.
The comments add to the scrutiny surrounding Manchester United’s attacking performances as the club seeks greater consistency in the Premier League. Despite taking the lead against Leeds, United were unable to hold on for all three points, leaving them with a draw rather than the victory Ferdinand believes their chances warranted.
Manchester United currently sit 13th in the Premier League standings, having collected seven points from seven matches this season. The club will need to improve its conversion rate in front of goal if it hopes to climb the table and build momentum in the coming fixtures.
