6 Countries With 10-Year Multiple-Entry Visitor Visas — And What Nigerians Need to Know

For frequent international travellers, a long-validity multiple-entry visa can make repeated trips easier by removing the need to apply for a new visa before every journey.

However, a 10-year visa does not mean the holder can remain in a country for 10 years. The visa validity determines how long it can be used for travel, while immigration authorities decide how long a visitor may stay during each entry.

For Nigerians, eligibility varies from country to country, and some 10-year visa arrangements are limited to specific nationalities or based on reciprocal agreements.

The United States, for example, currently does not offer Nigerian nationals 10-year B1/B2 visas. Under its current reciprocity schedule, Nigerian applicants receive B1, B2 and B1/B2 visas with one entry and three months’ validity.

Here are six countries where 10-year multiple-entry visitor visas are documented, along with what the arrangements mean for Nigerian travellers.

1. United Kingdom

Nigerians can apply for the UK’s Long-term Standard Visitor visa, which is available with validity periods of two, five or 10 years.

The 10-year visa permits multiple visits during its validity period, but it does not allow the holder to live in the UK for a decade. Standard Visitors are generally allowed to stay for up to six months per visit.

Applicants must demonstrate that they have a genuine need to visit the UK regularly and satisfy the applicable visitor requirements.

2. Canada

Canada can issue multiple-entry visitor visas with validity of up to 10 years.

The actual validity is determined by an immigration officer and may be shorter. The visa can also expire earlier if the passport or biometrics associated with the application expire.

Multiple-entry visas allow travellers to visit Canada repeatedly while the visa remains valid. Visitors are generally permitted to stay for up to six months per visit, although a border officer can authorise a different period.

For Nigerians, a 10-year Canadian visitor visa is possible but not automatic.

3. Mexico

Mexico offers a Long-Term Visitor Visa with validity of up to 10 years.

The visa permits multiple entries, with each visit generally allowing a stay of up to 180 days. Applicants must meet the relevant requirements and demonstrate eligibility under the applicable categories.

Mexico’s eligible categories include frequent travellers, applicants with sufficient economic solvency, prominent individuals and certain family members of Mexican citizens or residents.

For Nigerians, the 10-year option may be available if the applicant meets the requirements.

4. Brazil

Brazilian visitor visa rules allow validity of up to 10 years in cases where reciprocity arrangements apply.

The Brazilian Federal Police states that a visit visa is generally valid for one year and permits multiple entries, although its validity can reach 10 years where reciprocal arrangements provide for it.

The 10-year period is therefore not a standard option for every foreign national.

For Nigerian travellers, the applicable validity depends on Brazil’s reciprocity arrangements with Nigeria, so applicants should confirm the current position with the Brazilian mission before assuming they qualify for a 10-year visa.

5. United States — Not Currently for Nigerians

The United States is well known for issuing 10-year B1/B2 visitor visas to nationals of certain countries. Visa validity, however, is determined under the U.S. visa reciprocity system.

For example, U.S. reciprocity schedules provide for 120-month, multiple-entry B1/B2 visas for nationals of countries including China and Brazil.

Nigerian nationals currently do not receive the same validity. The U.S. reciprocity schedule for Nigeria lists B1, B2 and B1/B2 visas as one-entry visas valid for three months.

For Nigerians: No, under the current reciprocity schedule.

6. China — 10-Year Visas for Certain Nationalities

China also has reciprocal arrangements that allow nationals of certain countries to obtain long-term multiple-entry visas.

For instance, China and the United States have agreed to issue tourist and business visas with validity of up to 10 years to each other’s citizens. China and Canada have also had reciprocal arrangements providing multiple-entry visas of up to 10 years for business, tourism and family visits.

The option is therefore dependent on nationality and bilateral agreements rather than being a standard 10-year visa available to every foreign traveller.

For Nigerian travellers, the key point is to check the specific visa arrangement applicable to Nigerian nationals before making travel plans.
