Two bodies believed to be part of a group of three kidnapped Cameroonian women have been recovered from the Omambala River in Anambra State, the police confirmed on Saturday.
The victims—identified by relatives as Mrs. Bognou Alice and her niece, Miss Sandra—were found after a coordinated search involving the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu, local divers and volunteers. The recovery followed an intensive operation carried out late Friday, according to Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu.
“The recovered bodies have been positively identified by the family… Both bodies have been deposited in a mortuary for further forensic examination and investigative procedures,” he said.
The women were reportedly abducted earlier in the week, prompting a major manhunt across the area. Police have arrested two suspects: 37-year-old Nonso Augustine Akpeh and 44-year-old Kingsley Akpeh, who are said to be cooperating with investigators.
A third suspect, Uchenna Nicholas Mmadu, remains on the run. Security operatives have intensified efforts to locate and arrest him.
State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, extended condolences to the victims’ families and assured the public of the Command’s “unwavering commitment” to uncovering the full circumstances behind the killings. He also directed all units to escalate operations aimed at rescuing the remaining victim.
The discovery has unsettled residents and deepened concerns about the safety of foreign nationals and locals in the state. Police are urging the public to remain vigilant and provide any information that could assist the investigation.
