Terrorists Attack Niger Community, Abduct Residents as Troops Repel Assault

Suspected terrorists have attacked Dekara community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, abducting several residents and reportedly killing others before troops arrived in the area.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama said troops were deployed to Dekara on Friday, August 21, as a blocking force ahead of a planned clearance operation in the Kainji Lake National Park.

Dekara is located near the Nigeria-Benin Republic border and on the outskirts of the national park.

According to Makama, the suspected terrorists launched an attack on the community while troops were moving towards the area, forcing some residents to flee.

The troops later arrived and established a blocking position but came under attack from the terrorists.

The security forces reportedly repelled the assault without recording any casualties.

During the subsequent search of the area, troops recovered an AK-47 rifle and other items allegedly abandoned by the attackers.

The exact number of residents abducted or killed remains unclear, as several residents reportedly fled across the border into Benin Republic before the troops arrived.

Authorities are now preparing for a major clearance and search-and-rescue operation inside the Kainji Lake National Park, aimed at locating the terrorists and rescuing possible victims.

The operation is expected to involve newly deployed troops working alongside forces already operating in the area.
