Ogogo’s Old Video Resurfaces After Death, Recalling Years of Severe Illness

A throwback video of late Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has resurfaced following his death at 66, bringing renewed attention to his account of a severe illness he battled for several years.

In the interview, Ogogo spoke candidly about the health crisis that left him struggling with severe pain and difficulty eating. He said the illness, which he described as an ulcer-related condition, lasted for about six to seven years.

The veteran actor recalled experiencing serious symptoms, including chest and stomach pains, as well as vomiting blood. He said the condition became so severe that he spent long periods praying while sitting because of the discomfort.

Ogogo also recounted how his eating habits were affected by the illness. He said he could barely keep food down and survived for extended periods on cornmeal. “I spent six, seven years battling this illness, ulcer. I would vomit blood,” he said.

He further explained that a doctor had linked the worsening of his condition to a local remedy he used when treating malaria. The actor said he later combined medical treatment with spiritual intervention as he sought to recover from the illness.

The resurfaced account has drawn fresh attention because Ogogo died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after a separate battle with stage-four cancer. His daughters had appealed for urgent medical assistance days before his death as the family sought further treatment options.

Ogogo, one of the most recognisable figures in Yoruba-language cinema, was mourned by colleagues and admirers across Nigeria following his death. He was expected to be buried in his hometown, Ilaro, Ogun State, with a lying-in-state ceremony scheduled for Monday.

His old testimony now offers another glimpse into the health struggles the veteran actor endured during his life, adding to the tributes surrounding a career that spanned more than four decades.
