Benue Ex-Governor Gabriel Suswam Quits PDP Amid Prolonged Party Crisis

Former Benue State governor cites internal party disputes as reason for resignation, fueling speculation about future political alignment.

Gabriel Suswam, former governor of Benue State, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing persistent internal crises that have plagued the party for years.

The resignation, communicated in a letter dated February 4, was addressed to the Chairman of the Mbagber Council Ward in Logo Local Government Area. Suswam described the move as “honorable and necessary,” while wishing the party success should it resolve its longstanding internal disputes.

Although Suswam did not confirm his next political affiliation, political analysts note his alignment with a coalition of opposition leaders reportedly planning to use the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a platform for the upcoming elections.

“I consider it honorable and necessary to step aside while wishing the party well should it one day find the courage and consensus to resolve its long-standing issues,” Suswam stated in his resignation letter.

The former governor’s departure adds to growing concerns about PDP’s internal cohesion, with critics pointing to ongoing factionalism as a threat to its electoral competitiveness. Political watchers anticipate that Suswam’s next move could significantly influence opposition dynamics in Benue and the wider North-Central region.
