Truck Driver Dies in Head-On Collision on Crumbling Calabar–Itu Highway

Calabar, Nigeria – March 2, 2026 – A truck driver lost his life Monday morning after a head-on collision on the deteriorating Calabar–Itu federal highway, a major route connecting Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.

The crash involved two articulated trucks. Eyewitnesses said poor road conditions, including deep gullies and uneven surfaces, were a likely factor in the fatal accident. Both vehicles were reportedly travelling at safe speeds.

Samuel Otu, an eyewitness, described the incident:

“One of the long trucks was conveying stones while the other was loaded with jerricans of palm oil. The truck carrying stones swerved due to the bad portions of the road and rammed into the oncoming palm oil truck, crushing its front and killing the driver instantly.”

The collision left the palm oil-laden truck badly damaged, creating significant traffic disruption along the busy highway.

Mr. Innocent Tommy Etuk, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Cross River State, confirmed the crash. He directed officers to evacuate the victim’s body and clear the road to restore normal traffic flow.

“I deeply sympathise with the loss of life. I have instructed my men to move to the scene without delay to evacuate the body and ensure the highway is cleared for motorists,” Etuk said.

The Calabar–Itu highway has long been a source of concern for commuters due to its deteriorating condition and frequent accidents, highlighting urgent calls for proper maintenance.
