Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of growing uneasy over the increasing influence of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku argued that the evolving political landscape has positioned him at the centre of opposition realignments, triggering concern within the ruling party.
Atiku described the ADC’s rising profile as a “political reality,” suggesting it reflects a broader shift among Nigerians seeking an alternative ahead of the next general election.
“It is precisely this growing convergence… that has triggered panic among anti-democratic elements who now resort to crude propaganda,” the statement read.
He warned of what he called a coordinated campaign of disinformation aimed at weakening the opposition’s growing momentum, insisting that claims about his retirement from politics were false.
The comments come amid heightened political activity following the recent defection of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the ADC, a move widely seen as part of efforts to build a stronger opposition coalition.
Atiku urged his supporters and party members to remain focused, dismissing what he described as propaganda intended to derail the movement.
“No amount of disinformation will halt this movement. The determination of Nigerians far outweighs the fear of those who have failed them,” he said.
With alliances forming and political actors repositioning, early signs suggest the 2027 election could see a more competitive landscape.
Atiku maintained that the opposition’s growing unity reflects shifting public sentiment, while calling on Nigerians to remain committed to what he described as a collective effort to “rebuild the nation.”
