A prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress African Democratic Congress, Ladan Salihu, has launched a strong attack on the ruling All Progressives Congress, predicting that it will fail what he called a “credibility test” in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Salihu said the current government will struggle to withstand what he described as growing public anger and frustration at the polls.
“When it comes to credible elections and elections that are based on integrity, this government will fail the integrity and credibility test at the polls,” he said, adding that public dissatisfaction will play a major role in shaping the next election outcome.
His comments were directed at the administration of President Bola Tinubu, which he accused of losing public trust despite its political dominance across states and the National Assembly.
Salihu also intensified calls for the removal of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, alleging bias and lack of credibility.
He described the electoral umpire as unfit for office, insisting that Amupitan had failed both integrity and competency tests required of someone overseeing national elections.
“Amupitan should resign or should be removed… he has failed the integrity test,” Salihu said, adding that the commission under his leadership cannot be trusted to conduct a fair election.
He further claimed that the electoral body has lost the confidence of both opposition figures and ordinary Nigerians, though INEC has repeatedly maintained that its leadership remains impartial and committed to credible elections.
When asked whether the ADC would boycott the 2027 polls if Amupitan remains in office, Salihu said the party would consult widely before making a final decision, stressing that participation in elections remains a constitutional duty of the opposition.
He also alleged that the APC is increasingly uneasy ahead of 2027, despite its control of 31 state governments and a majority in the legislature, claiming it lacks genuine grassroots support.
“They don’t have control of the people,” he said, insisting that Nigerians are increasingly disillusioned with the ruling party’s performance.
Salihu expressed confidence that the ADC and other opposition forces would challenge and potentially defeat the APC in the next general election, citing widespread dissatisfaction as a key factor.
