Tragedy struck late Saturday along the Abeokuta–Lagos route after a fatal lone vehicle crash at Eruku Bridge claimed the lives of 11 occupants in one of the deadliest road accidents recorded in Ogun State this year.
The accident involved a gold Toyota with registration number GGE722KJ, which reportedly somersaulted and plunged off the bridge, trapping all passengers inside the vehicle.
The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that the crash occurred on May 10, 2026, describing it as a devastating incident that required urgent emergency response.
According to the Ogun State Sector Command spokesperson, Odunsin Afolabi, rescue teams from the Itori Unit Command were immediately deployed to the scene after the crash was reported.
However, despite rapid intervention efforts, all 11 occupants of the vehicle were confirmed dead at the scene.
The Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, said preliminary investigations suggest the driver may have been under the influence at the time of the crash, while overloading is also being considered as a contributing factor.
Emergency responders, supported by members of the local community, were forced to dismantle the wreckage before recovering the bodies from the severely damaged vehicle.
The remains of the victims have since been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.
Authorities have expressed deep concern over the recurring loss of lives on the Abeokuta–Lagos corridor, a major highway known for heavy traffic and frequent night-time accidents.
Ogun FRSC officials have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly during night travel, and to avoid speeding, overloading and driving under the influence.
The command also extended condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as painful and preventable if basic road safety rules had been observed.
The latest crash adds to growing concerns over road safety enforcement and driver behaviour on Nigeria’s highways, where fatal accidents continue to claim multiple lives annually.
