Former Sokoto State governor and serving senator, Aminu Tambuwal, has withdrawn from the Sokoto South Senatorial race ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development marks a major political shift in Sokoto State, with the African Democratic Congress, ADC, moving quickly to endorse former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Faruk Yabo, as its consensus candidate for the senatorial seat.
Tambuwal, a former presidential aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 elections, had stepped down during the PDP primary in support of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
His latest withdrawal from the 2027 Sokoto South Senate contest is expected to fuel fresh political calculations within the opposition ahead of the elections.
Meanwhile, the ADC has also settled for Manir Muhammad Dan’iya as its consensus governorship candidate for Sokoto State.
Dan’iya previously served as deputy governor during Tambuwal’s administration in Sokoto, making his emergence another sign of the former governor’s continued influence in the state’s political structure despite stepping away from the Senate race.
Political observers believe the ADC’s early adoption of consensus candidates is part of a broader strategy to avoid internal crises and strengthen its chances ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2027 election season.
The party is yet to officially explain the circumstances surrounding Tambuwal’s withdrawal or whether he will play a broader national political role ahead of the elections.
