Emotions ran high in Ogbomoso on Friday as family members, colleagues, church members and residents gathered for the burial rites of Adesiyan Adegboye, the teacher killed during last week’s deadly bandit attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The burial ceremony began at Ayegun Baptist Church in Ogbomoso, where mourners paid tribute to the 49-year-old educator whose death has deepened concerns over rising insecurity targeting schools in the state.
Adegboye was shot dead during the coordinated attack carried out by armed bandits on three schools last Friday morning. He is expected to be buried later in the day at his residence in the Owolake area of Ogbomoso.
The late teacher, born on December 11, 1976, was among the victims caught in the violent invasion of Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School, Esiele.
The attackers stormed the schools around 9:30 a.m., killing Adegboye at the scene while abducting several teachers and students in one of the most disturbing school attacks recorded in Oyo State in recent times.
The incident triggered widespread panic across Ogbomoso and nearby communities, forcing many parents to withdraw their children from schools over fears of further attacks.
Some schools reportedly shut down temporarily after rumours spread that bandits had infiltrated the campus of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology. The institution later dismissed the claims as false.
Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier confirmed that seven students were abducted from Community Secondary School, while another 18 pupils and seven teachers were kidnapped from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School during the attack.
The killing of Adegboye and the mass abduction sparked outrage among residents and education stakeholders, with many calling for stronger security measures around schools in rural communities.
In response to the attack, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, visited the affected area and ordered the deployment of additional detectives from the Force Headquarters in Abuja to support rescue operations.
Police authorities said the deployment was aimed at strengthening ongoing efforts by security agencies to secure the release of the kidnapped teachers and students still being held by the attackers.
As mourning continues in Ogbomoso, anxiety remains high among residents awaiting updates on the fate of the abducted victims.
