Former senator Kabiru Marafa has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Zamfara State ahead of the 2027 general election.
Marafa secured the party’s ticket through a consensus arrangement reached during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, further strengthening his political comeback after recently dumping the ADC for the NDC.
The announcement was officially made by the chairman of the party’s electoral committee, Aminu Jelani, who confirmed that party leaders and delegates unanimously adopted Marafa as the candidate for the 2027 governorship race.
Speaking shortly after his emergence, Marafa thanked party members for what he described as overwhelming confidence in his leadership and pledged to provide responsible governance if elected governor of the state.
The former lawmaker said Zamfara’s development had suffered over the years due to corruption, poor accountability and weak management of public resources.
According to him, his administration would focus on transparency, prudent spending and policies aimed at improving the welfare of ordinary residents across the state.
Marafa also promised to create equal opportunities for citizens, strengthen governance institutions and address challenges affecting economic growth and public confidence in leadership.
“Corruption has slowed down the progress of Zamfara for too long. We must build a government that is accountable to the people and focused on real development,” he said.
His emergence adds another major twist to the growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, especially within opposition parties seeking to challenge the dominance of larger political blocs across the country.
Marafa’s recent defection to the NDC had earlier been confirmed by the party’s national leadership led by Seriake Dickson, who disclosed that the former senator agreed to help strengthen the party’s structure and political influence in Zamfara State.
Political observers believe Marafa’s influence and grassroots support could make the Zamfara governorship contest one of the closely watched races ahead of the 2027 polls.
