Nigerian rapper YCee has responded to the criticism that followed his controversial comments about what he described as the rise of “brain-rot” content on Nigerian social media.
The music star recently sparked heated debate after referring to the growing popularity of certain online content as an “olodo uprising,” using popular TikTok creator Peller as an example while expressing concern over the type of entertainment many Nigerians now consume.
YCee argued that social media audiences are increasingly rewarding content he considers lacking in substance, while educational and informative content continues to receive less attention. His remarks quickly divided opinion online, with many users defending Peller and others agreeing with the rapper’s concerns.
Several critics accused YCee of unnecessarily singling out the TikTok personality, insisting that he could have expressed his opinion without mentioning Peller by name. Others argued that content creators simply produce what audiences demand and should not be blamed for changing entertainment trends.
Reacting to the backlash, YCee maintained that his comments were never intended as a personal attack on Peller. Instead, he said his focus was on the broader shift in digital entertainment and the growing preference for what he considers “brain-rot” content over edutainment and intellectually engaging material.
The debate has since evolved into a wider conversation about the influence of social media on young Nigerians, with many questioning whether content creators should prioritise educational value or simply cater to audience preferences.
While supporters of YCee believe his remarks have highlighted an important issue about the quality of online content, others insist that entertainment exists in different forms and that viewers ultimately decide what succeeds on digital platforms.
