Notorious Bandit Flaunts Alleged Kidnap Ransom Cash on TikTok, Sparks Fresh Security Concerns

Fresh concerns have emerged over the growing use of social media by criminal groups after a notorious bandit, identified as Auta Yankuzo, allegedly posted a photograph on TikTok showing a large sum of cash believed to be proceeds from kidnapping-for-ransom operations.

The allegation was made on Wednesday by conflict journalist Bakatsine, who shared the development in a post on X. According to him, the image was uploaded to Yankuzo’s TikTok account on Tuesday.

Bakatsine, who regularly reports on insecurity in Nigeria’s North-West, said the money displayed in the photograph appeared to be linked to a ransom payment. However, he noted that the image may not be recent.

“Bandits TikToker Auta Yankuzo has posted a ransom payment on his account yesterday. The picture appears to be from previous payment as the ground looks too dry to be of recent days,” Bakatsine wrote.

The latest post has renewed concerns over the increasing online presence of armed bandits, with security analysts warning that criminal groups are using social media platforms to project influence, intimidate victims and publicise their activities.

The incident comes only days after another video circulated online showing heavily armed bandits displaying large amounts of cash allegedly obtained from ransom payments. The footage sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for stronger action against kidnapping syndicates.

Kidnapping for ransom remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing security challenges, particularly across the North-West and parts of the North-Central, where armed groups have repeatedly attacked communities, travellers, schools and farmers.
