Bandit Attacks Empty 10 Zamfara Communities as Over 40 Residents Remain in Captivity

Fresh waves of bandit attacks have forced hundreds of residents to flee their homes in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, leaving Tashar Mayanchi and more than 10 surrounding communities virtually deserted.

The latest development has heightened fears over the worsening security situation in the state, with reports indicating that more than 40 people are still being held captive after four consecutive days of attacks by armed bandits.

Security analyst Bakatsine disclosed the incident in a post shared on X on Thursday, citing local sources who described the scale of the displacement as alarming.

According to the report, residents abandoned their homes in search of safety as the sustained attacks overwhelmed the affected communities. The mass exodus has left once-bustling villages nearly empty, raising fresh concerns about the growing humanitarian and security crisis in the area.

Bakatsine warned that the continued displacement of rural communities could create new opportunities for criminal groups to expand their operations, particularly along the strategic Zamfara–Sokoto highway.

He noted that if the security situation remains unchecked, bandits could tighten their grip on the corridor, further isolating vulnerable communities and disrupting movement across the region.

“Yesterday, repeated bandit attacks forced residents to flee Tashar Mayanchi and more than 10 surrounding communities in Maru LGA of Zamfara State, leaving once-thriving villages largely deserted. Local sources say more than 40 people remain in captivity after four consecutive days of attacks, raising fears that continued displacement could allow bandits to threaten the Zamfara–Sokoto highway and further isolate affected communities,” he wrote.

Questioning the pace of the security response, the analyst added: “How many more rural communities must be emptied before meaningful security reaches there?”

The attacks underscore the persistent security challenges facing several communities in Zamfara State, where repeated bandit raids, kidnappings and mass displacement continue to affect thousands of residents.
