Niger Imposes 24-Hour Curfew After Protests Over Deaths of 37 Suspected Miners

The Niger State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew following protests over the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago announced the curfew during a press conference on Friday, directing that it take effect immediately after Juma’at prayers.

The measure comes amid protests triggered by the deaths of the 37 detainees, who had reportedly been arrested during enforcement operations against suspected illegal mining activities in the state.

The deaths occurred in the early hours of Thursday, September 17, 2026, after the suspects were detained by the Niger State Command of the NSCDC.

Niger State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, said the suspects arrested over alleged illegal mining were found dead while in NSCDC custody.

The cause of death has not been conclusively established. Authorities have indicated that medical and forensic examinations are required to determine what happened to the detainees.

The curfew is expected to restrict movement across the state for 24 hours as authorities seek to contain tensions arising from the incident and maintain public order.

The development comes as federal and state authorities face pressure to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and determine whether anyone should be held accountable.
