Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo says Nigeria still has significant work ahead as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, describing the progress recorded so far as a foundation rather than a finished achievement. Daily Post
Okpebholo made the remarks in his Independence Day message to Nigerians on Thursday, October 1, 2026. He thanked Edo residents for their patience and said government must remain responsive to citizens, including when public feedback is uncomfortable.
The governor also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as efforts to reposition Nigeria, saying the Renewed Hope Agenda was necessary for national revival. He said the programme had contributed to movement towards economic stability and growth.
Okpebholo urged Nigerians to use the anniversary to renew their commitment to peace and unity. He said patriotism should be reflected not only in words but also in how citizens treat one another and protect public property.
For Edo State, the governor identified security as the first responsibility of his administration, arguing that farming, trade, investment and other economic activities depend on a peaceful environment. He assured residents that his government would continue working to protect lives and property.
“We have worked hard to make Edo safer. We are rebuilding our roads, upgrading our schools and hospitals, and creating opportunities for our teeming youths,” Okpebholo said. Trending News
He said the administration would continue collaborating with security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders because of their knowledge of local communities and terrain. He also warned those seeking to disrupt the state’s peace, saying Edo would not provide a safe environment for criminals.
Okpebholo wished Edo residents a peaceful Independence Day celebration and called for continued commitment to the progress of both the state and Nigeria. His message came as President Tinubu also addressed Nigerians, with the Federal Government marking 66 years since independence on October 1, 1960.
