WAEC Appoints Amos Dangut as New Registrar, CEO for Five-Year Term

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has appointed Dr Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, taking over the leadership of the examination body from Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

Dangut assumed office on October 1, 2026, beginning a five-year tenure that will run until September 2031. His appointment was ratified by the WAEC Council, the organisation’s international governing board, during its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.

Before his new appointment, Dangut served as Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office from October 2023 to September 2026. He becomes the 14th Registrar to Council.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science and PhD in Animal Science, as well as a Master of Education in Administration and Planning.

He began his career in education in 1994 at St. Louis College, Jos, where he worked as a WAEC examiner before joining the Council in 1998. Over the years, he held several positions, including Assistant Registrar in the Test Development Division, Head of Examinations Security, Branch Controller in Yola and Controller of the Post-Examinations Department.

Dangut also served as Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja and later became Deputy Registrar and Head of the Nigeria National Office before his appointment as its substantive head in 2023.

With more than two decades of experience at WAEC, Dangut has been involved in the development and administration of examinations, with a focus on technology-driven systems. During his tenure as Head of National Office, he championed initiatives including Computer-Based WASSCE, question-paper serialization and the Digital Electronic Marking System.

He also oversaw the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive and technology systems supporting examination logistics and examiner monitoring.

Beyond WAEC, Dangut has served on the boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. He currently represents the West African sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.

Dangut is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management. He has also published in national and international journals and presented papers at several academic and professional conferences.
