Arise Television anchor Rufai Oseni has criticised Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike over his comments about the 2027 presidential election, accusing him of openly boasting about political actions that raise concerns about the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
Oseni made the remarks on Wednesday during the “What’s Trending” segment of Arise Television’s Morning Show, anchored by Ojy Okpe. His comments followed Wike’s declaration that President Bola Tinubu must win the FCT in the 2027 presidential election.
The minister had also recounted his role in the 2024 Edo State governorship election, claiming he influenced the outcome against the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo.
Reacting, Oseni alleged that Wike often carried out political actions privately before discussing them publicly. He also accused the minister of allowing his disagreement with former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki to influence his position on the governorship contest.
The broadcaster argued that Wike’s remarks raised questions about the fairness of elections and the conduct of political actors. He maintained that political disagreements should not override the interests of voters or undermine the prospects of candidates considered capable of delivering good governance.
Oseni also revisited the controversy surrounding the 2019 Rivers State governorship election, in which Wike contested against African Action Congress candidate Biokpomabo Awara. The Independent National Electoral Commission suspended the electoral process before eventually announcing the final result, a development Oseni cited while questioning public surprise at Wike’s latest comments.
The Arise TV anchor further criticised what he described as inconsistencies between election-related information reported on the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal, IReV, and results announced by the commission. He argued that such controversies had weakened public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
Oseni urged Nigerians to pay closer attention to political leaders’ statements and actions, warning that public support for politicians without demanding accountability could perpetuate problems in the electoral process. His comments add to the growing debate over political influence, electoral credibility and preparations for the 2027 general election.
