Amaechi Says He Could Leave Wife If She Governs Nigeria Like Tinubu

Rotimi Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential running mate, has said he would distance himself from his wife, Judith, if she became Nigeria’s president and governed in a manner similar to President Bola Tinubu.

Amaechi made the remark during an interview with Rapid TV, where he argued that personal relationships should not influence how Nigerians assess political leaders or make electoral decisions.

The former Rivers State governor said his love for his wife would not prevent him from criticising her leadership or withdrawing his support if her administration adopted policies and practices he associates with Tinubu’s government.

“Right now, the person I’m closest to is my wife, not my kids. So, if my wife becomes president and starts doing the same things Tinubu is doing, I’ll be upset and won’t follow her, even though I love her. It’s either she changes, or I leave her,” he said.

Amaechi also urged Nigerians not to allow religious, ethnic or political affiliations to determine their choice in the 2027 presidential election.

He called on voters to assess Tinubu based on his performance in office rather than personal sentiments, while encouraging them to consider the opposition ahead of the next election.

“I hope Nigerians won’t let religion, politics, or ethnicity influence their choice. Just forget about Tinubu,” Amaechi said.

The ADC chieftain argued that Nigerians had already experienced Tinubu’s leadership and should consider giving another political platform an opportunity to govern.

He maintained that the current administration had been tested and urged voters to consider the opposition as an alternative.

“There’s a difference between Tinubu’s group and ours. They’ve been tested, so you know the next four years will be tough. We haven’t been tested yet, so give us a chance,” he added.

His comments come as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
