Aisha Yesufu Slams Shehu Sani Over “Tribal” Claims Against Peter Obi’s Support Base

Political tension has resurfaced online after activist Aisha Yesufu dismissed comments suggesting that support for Peter Obi is limited to his ethnic group.

The reaction followed remarks by former senator Shehu Sani, who in a podcast interview described Obi’s supporters as largely tribal and argued that his presidency would not bring meaningful change.

Sani said, “The support for Peter Obi is tribal. Many of those supporting him are people who come from his ethnic background. If Peter Obi becomes President of Nigeria today, nothing will change, everything will be the same.”

His comments quickly triggered backlash from Yesufu, who took to her official X account on Monday to challenge the narrative.

She described the statement as part of what she called repeated and coordinated political attacks against the former presidential candidate.

“The orchestrated attacks against Peter Obi @PeterObi is laughable at best and pathetic at worst! The lie that his support base is tribal died in 2022,” she wrote.

Yesufu insisted that Obi’s supporters cut across Nigeria’s ethnic and regional lines, rejecting the claim that his movement is narrowly based.

“We proved beyond reasonable doubt that the 4 people that were tweeting in the room in 2022 were from the 4 corners of the country!” she added.

She further argued that the continued focus on Obi by members of the ruling All Progressives Congress reflects his continued political relevance.

“If Peter Obi was not a threat to their illegitimate occupation of the seat of power, APC and their supporters would not have made Peter Obi their fascination that they talk about all the time,” she stated.

The exchange adds to ongoing political debates in Nigeria over identity politics and the structure of electoral support ahead of future elections.
