Army Rescues Kidnap Victim in Abia as Troops Intensify Crackdown on Armed Groups Across State

A coordinated military and police operation in Abia State has led to the rescue of a kidnapped victim, as Nigerian Army troops expand security operations across multiple local government areas in a renewed offensive against armed groups.

The operation, carried out under the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade in conjunction with Operation UDO KA and Operation Crush, resulted in the safe recovery of Mr. Onyebuchi Nwaoha in Umuahia following intelligence-led tracking of suspected abductors.

Military authorities say the rescue was executed by soldiers of the 145 Battalion working alongside the Nigeria Police Anti-Cultism Unit. Several suspects have been arrested and are currently in custody as investigations continue into wider criminal networks operating in the region.

Security officials confirmed that the operation forms part of “Operation Eastern Sanity II,” a broader campaign aimed at dismantling kidnapping syndicates and other violent criminal groups across the South-East.

In addition to the rescue mission, troops have increased their presence along key routes and communities considered vulnerable, including major highways such as the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway and the ABSU–Okigwe corridor, as well as several local government areas across Abia State.

The Army said the intensified patrols also target suspected members of IPOB/ESN and other armed groups, while efforts are ongoing to curb the illegal use of explosives in parts of the state.

In Aba, troops responding to a reported shooting incident at Brass Street in the GRA area discovered the body of an unidentified man believed to have been killed by armed attackers. The remains were evacuated by emergency responders, while investigations have been launched to identify and arrest those responsible.

Elsewhere, coordinated night patrols and “stand-to” operations were conducted across several communities, including Arochukwu, Bende, Isiugu, and surrounding areas. Security authorities reported that the locations remained calm during the operations.

The Nigerian Army described the developments as part of sustained efforts to restore stability, reduce violent crime, and reassure residents across Abia State.

Residents have been urged to support ongoing security operations by providing credible intelligence and avoiding activities or affiliations that could undermine peace efforts in the region.
