Australian Athletics has provisionally suspended former sprint champion Jake Doran after he was charged with an alleged child sex offence in Queensland, Australia.
Doran, 26, was arrested last week in Townsville and charged with one count of indecent treatment of a child under the age of 16.
According to Australia’s national broadcaster, ABC, the athlete was granted bail and is expected to return to court on November 5.
Australian Athletics confirmed the provisional suspension in a statement on Thursday, saying it had been informed that an athlete had been charged with a serious offence in Townsville.
“Based on information provided to Australian Athletics, the organisation has imposed a provisional action on the athlete,” the governing body said.
The suspension bars Doran from attending club, member association and Australian Athletics events. He is also prohibited from participating in training activities while the provisional measure remains in place.
Doran previously established himself as a prominent figure in Australian sprinting, winning two national titles in the 200-metre event.
He also represented Australia at two World Athletics Championships and competed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The case is expected to return to court on November 5. The charge remains an allegation, and the provisional suspension is an interim measure rather than a determination of guilt.
