Tobi Amusan Wins Grand Prix Brescia as Nigerian Star Eyes 2026 Diamond League Final

Tobi Amusan has bounced back with a victory in Italy, winning the women’s 100m hurdles at the Grand Prix Brescia ahead of the 2026 Diamond League Final.

The Nigerian clocked 12.56 seconds to finish first despite running into a strong 1.7m/s headwind. American hurdler Alaysha Johnson came second in 12.62 seconds, while Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent took third in 12.75 seconds.

Amusan’s win comes just days after American Olympic champion Masai Russell broke her world record at the Zurich Diamond League. Russell posted 12.09 seconds at the Letzigrund Stadium, taking three hundredths of a second off Amusan’s previous mark of 12.12 seconds.

The Nigerian had held the 100m hurdles world record for four years after setting the 12.12-second mark in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. She followed that performance by winning the final in 12.06 seconds, although the time could not count as a world record because of an excessive tailwind.

Amusan’s latest victory gives her a timely boost as she prepares for another showdown with the world’s leading hurdlers. The 2026 Diamond League Final will take place in Brussels, Belgium, from September 4 to 5.

The Nigerian remains one of the most successful athletes in Diamond League history, having won the women’s 100m hurdles title three times in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

With Russell now holding the world record, attention will be on how Amusan responds when the pair meet again in Brussels. The Nigerian will be hoping to turn her strong showing in Brescia into another Diamond League triumph.
