Business development and management consultancy firm B.O.S.S Resources and Consults Ltd has challenged young people in Imo State to develop relevant skills, embrace creativity, and improve their employability to remain competitive in today’s labour market.
The call was made during the Owerri Career Day, a youth-focused career summit held in Owerri, the Imo State capital, where industry experts, employers, and human resource professionals engaged participants on career development and employment opportunities.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of B.O.S.S Resources and Consults Ltd, Chief Sir Francis Owums, described the summit as a practical career development initiative designed to equip young people with the skills and mindset required to thrive in modern workplaces.
According to him, the programme was organised to bridge the gap between job seekers and employers by exposing participants to current business trends and creating direct employment opportunities.
“One of the biggest misconceptions today is that there are no jobs. From our experience as recruiters and business consultants, there are jobs, there are opportunities, businesses are opening, investors are investing, and companies are recruiting,” Owums said.
“The real challenge is that employers are struggling to find people who possess the skills, competence, attitude, emotional intelligence and professionalism required for those opportunities.”
Concern Over Employability Standards
Owums expressed concern over what he described as the declining employability of many youths in Owerri, revealing that recruitment firms are increasingly sourcing qualified candidates from outside Imo State to fill critical positions.
He noted that B.O.S.S Resources has spent over a decade building businesses and recruiting staff across Nigeria, managing more than 2,000 employees for clients while supporting the development of over 200 businesses nationwide.
According to him, investors and business owners have become reluctant to recruit locally due to concerns about professionalism and workplace readiness.
“There are job opportunities, but there are not enough employable hands to take advantage of them,” he said, stressing that businesses cannot thrive where competent manpower is lacking.
Top Employers Conduct On-the-Spot Recruitment
One of the highlights of the summit was the participation of leading organisations and recruitment firms, many of which interviewed participants for immediate employment opportunities.
Among the organisations represented were Access Bank, GTCO, Moniepoint, MTN, Airtel, HRwithQueen Consults, and Thrive Leadership Consult.
The event also featured the Director of Human Resources and Administration at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) headquarters in Port Harcourt, Chief Sir Kelechi Nwelue, who enlightened participants on opportunities available within the commission.
Industry experts and career professionals delivered sessions on leadership, workplace ethics, emotional intelligence, continuous learning, self-discipline, and career advancement.
Government Commends Initiative
Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Chinenyenwa Owuamalam, commended the organisers for supporting the state’s youth development agenda.
She encouraged participants to build on their academic qualifications by acquiring practical skills that would make them globally competitive.
According to her, while government may not be able to provide jobs for every graduate, it can create opportunities that enable young people to become self-reliant and productive.
She also urged the youths to avoid anti-social activities and focus on career development, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
Participants Welcome Career Initiative
One of the participants, Frances Chinagorom, described the summit as an eye-opening experience, saying the knowledge gained would positively influence her career path.
She pledged to apply the lessons learned and encourage other young people to take advantage of similar opportunities.
The Owerri Career Day attracted students, graduates, professionals, employers, and representatives from various corporate organisations, providing a platform for networking, mentorship, career guidance, and recruitment.
