Ballon d’Or 2026: No Nigerian Nominated as Kane, Yamal, Mbappé Lead Race

For the first time in three years, Nigeria will have no representative among the nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with the winner set to be announced at the London Palladium on Monday.

England captain Harry Kane, Spain’s Lamine Yamal and France forward Kylian Mbappé are among the leading contenders for the prestigious individual award.

No Nigerian player, coach or goalkeeper features on the men’s shortlist, women’s shortlist or any of the other award categories.

The 70th edition of the ceremony is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. in London, corresponding to 9 p.m. in Nigeria. It will be the first time the ceremony has been held outside Paris, with Kate Scott and Thierry Henry serving as hosts.

Among the notable absentees are Super Eagles stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, whose performances had raised expectations of another Nigerian presence at the ceremony.

Osimhen and Lookman scored seven of Nigeria’s 14 goals at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, finishing among the tournament’s top four scorers.

Osimhen also recorded 30 goal contributions across all competitions during the 2025/26 season, while Lookman registered 12 goals and six assists.

However, the Ballon d’Or assessment period ran from August 3, 2025, to July 19, 2026, the date of the World Cup final. Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the tournament may have affected the country’s prospects, given the importance of performances on the international stage.

The omissions mark a pause in Nigeria’s recent presence among the award nominees.

Osimhen finished eighth in the 2023 Ballon d’Or rankings following a prolific campaign that helped Napoli win the Serie A title. In 2024, Lookman placed 14th after scoring a hat-trick in Atalanta’s Europa League final victory over Bayer Leverkusen and delivering impressive performances at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria’s recognition last year came through the women’s game.

Super Falcons coach Justine Madugu and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie were nominated after Nigeria defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final to secure a record-extending 10th continental title.

Madugu was shortlisted for Women’s Team Coach of the Year, while Nnadozie was nominated for the Yashin Trophy. Both finished fourth in their respective categories in Paris.

Africa’s sole representative on the 2026 men’s shortlist is Senegal captain Sadio Mané, who plays for Al Nassr.

Paris Saint-Germain lead the club representation with 10 nominees, including defending champion Ousmane Dembélé, Achraf Hakimi and Vitinha.

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Arsenal also have multiple players on the 30-man shortlist. Arsenal’s representatives include Gabriel, Declan Rice and William Saliba, forming the largest group from the Premier League.

Erling Haaland and Bruno Fernandes are the other players from England’s top flight on the list.

Eight-time winner Lionel Messi is also nominated following an impressive World Cup campaign, although he is considered an outsider in the race.

Kane is seeking to become the first Englishman to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen claimed the honour in 2001. He captained England to third place at the World Cup.

Yamal, meanwhile, helped Spain win the World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time. The 19-year-old, who also won the European Championship in 2024, finished second behind Dembélé last year and is pursuing a third consecutive Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best player under 21.

Barcelona midfielder Rodri, who won the World Cup Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, is also among the 30 nominees.

Mbappé completes the leading group despite failing to win a major team trophy during the assessment period. The Real Madrid forward claimed top-scorer honours in La Liga, the Champions League and the World Cup. His club teammates Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Júnior are also nominated.

The winner will be determined by journalists from the top 100 countries in the FIFA men’s world rankings, with each voter ranking their top 10 players. The assessment considers individual performances, team achievements, and a player’s class and fair play.

Meanwhile, PSG face a scheduling clash, as their Ligue 1 fixture against Lyon has been moved to Monday evening. Injured players Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are among those who will be free to attend the ceremony because they are expected to miss the match.

For Nigerian football fans, the ceremony will take place without a homegrown nominee, highlighting how international tournament performances can influence a player’s standing in the global awards race.
