Bandits Kill Newly Recruited Teacher, Two Others in Sokoto Road Ambush

Suspected bandits have killed three people, including a newly recruited teacher, in an ambush along the Gundumi–Isa road in Sokoto State.

The victims were identified as Maniru Sa’adu Imam, 30, a newly recruited teacher; Abdurrahman Umar, the driver of the vehicle conveying them; and Umar’s five-year-old son, Abubakar Abdurrahman.

Imam, who was a father of one, was reportedly returning from Sokoto metropolis after attending a salary verification exercise when the attack occurred on Wednesday.

A witness, Malam Kabiru Isa, said the victims were travelling behind a convoy heading to Isa under heavy security escort.

According to the witness, the convoy departed at about 4 p.m., but some vehicles, including the one carrying the victims, returned to their usual meeting point and were left behind.

Isa said security personnel reportedly spotted suspected bandits as the convoy approached Gundumi and opened fire, forcing the attackers to flee.

However, the gunmen were said to have later laid an ambush for vehicles travelling behind the convoy and opened fire on their occupants.

The attack reportedly left three people dead and three others injured, while one passenger remained missing as of Thursday morning.

The bodies of the deceased were reportedly buried on Thursday morning.

The incident has heightened concerns about the safety of motorists and other travellers along roads in Sokoto State, where suspected bandit attacks continue to pose a threat to civilians.
