Nigerian rapper Emeka Akumefule, popularly known as Blaqbonez, has said travelling abroad and experiencing life in other countries made him realise how far Nigeria lags behind in development.
The rapper described Nigeria as “hectic” and said he did not want to spend the rest of his life living in the country, although he acknowledged that the challenges of Nigerian society motivate him to work harder.
Speaking during a recent episode of The Zeze Millz Show, Blaqbonez said he wished Nigeria were a better country, despite the energy and determination he associates with its people.
“Nigeria is hectic, but it is still home. When you go to other countries, you will realise how far we are from where we should be. But the vibe and energy are still there. There is a hustle spirit that comes with being Nigerian. I really wish the country was better,” he said.
The musician also spoke about his plans for retirement, saying his ideal future involved living on a large ranch and raising animals away from the pressures of urban life.
“I don’t want to spend the rest of my life living in Nigeria. I don’t think that there is any successful person who wants to live in Nigeria after retirement. Maybe there are some people,” Blaqbonez said.
He added that his vision of retirement was centred on having a spacious ranch and keeping animals, a lifestyle he said he did not see himself pursuing in Nigeria.
His comments reflect his personal views on the country’s development challenges and the kind of life he hopes to enjoy after his music career. At the same time, he acknowledged that Nigeria’s vibrant atmosphere and strong work ethic remain important aspects of the country’s appeal.
Blaqbonez is among Nigeria’s prominent contemporary rap acts, known for his music and outspoken public comments. His remarks have brought renewed attention to discussions about living conditions, development and the aspirations of Nigerians who consider opportunities abroad.
