Afrobeats star Davido has expressed sadness following reports that an Accord Party member, Sunday Obube, was allegedly killed by suspected political thugs ahead of the Osun State governorship election.
Obube was reportedly killed around 6:00 a.m. on Friday in the Omi Eran Atijo community, Ilesa West Local Government Area of Osun State, a day before the August 15 governorship election.
Reacting to a viral video of the incident, Davido took to his verified X account to mourn the deceased. The singer wrote: “Mehnnnnn may his perfect soul rest in peace.”
Davido’s reaction comes days after he publicly criticised Osun East Senator Francis Fadahunsi over comments that sparked controversy ahead of the election.
Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District, was reportedly seen in a video addressing supporters and allegedly calling for the killing of Accord Party members encountered ahead of the election.
The remarks drew condemnation, with concerns raised over the potential impact of inflammatory political statements on tensions ahead of the poll.
The reported death of Obube has now added to concerns over political violence as Osun voters prepare to elect their next governor. The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the identity of those responsible, remain subject to investigation.
The development comes as political parties and security agencies prepare for the August 15 election, with stakeholders repeatedly urging supporters to reject violence and allow voters to exercise their democratic rights peacefully.
