Davido Reveals Wizkid, Wande Coal’s Advice That Helped Him Choose Music Over School

Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has recalled seeking advice from fellow Nigerian music stars Wizkid and Wande Coal when he was struggling to balance his education with his growing passion for music.

Davido shared the story in the Afrobeats Documentary, explaining that he wanted to know how Wizkid and Wande Coal had managed to pursue music while stepping away from formal education.

According to the singer, both artistes told him that achieving major success in music was the key to making such a decision possible. Davido said he already knew his father would not support him abandoning his studies without first proving himself in the music industry.

“I asked Wizkid and Wande Coal how they left school to do music. They told me the only way was to blow up,” Davido recalled.

The turning point came after his hit single ‘Dami Duro’ became a major success. Davido said the song’s breakthrough made it difficult for him to continue with his education at the time, despite his father’s position on schooling.

“I knew my dad wouldn’t allow me, but when ‘Dami Duro’ blew up, I couldn’t continue,” he said.

Davido eventually returned to school after reaching an agreement with his father. The arrangement allowed him to continue his education while pursuing music, with his father also agreeing to provide him with a recording studio and support his musical ambitions.

The singer successfully combined both paths and graduated from Babcock University in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music.

Davido’s account highlights the difficult balance he faced between pursuing an emerging music career and meeting his family’s expectations around education, before eventually finding a way to pursue both.
