Nigerian comedian and former Big Brother Naija housemate, DeeOne, has stirred controversy after alleging that most protests in Nigeria are driven by political interests rather than genuine public frustration.
Speaking on Vanguard’s podcast on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, DeeOne claimed that a large majority of demonstrations across the country are influenced or funded by political actors working behind the scenes.
He argued that while protests often appear to reflect public anger, many are allegedly engineered to serve hidden agendas, including targeting opponents or shaping public opinion.
According to him, this makes it increasingly difficult for Nigerians to distinguish between authentic grassroots protests and those allegedly organised for political gain.
“There’s always an agenda behind most of them,” he said during the interview, maintaining that political sponsorship is a recurring feature in Nigeria’s protest landscape.
His comments immediately triggered heated debate online, with many users split between agreement and strong criticism.
Some social media users supported his position, suggesting that political interference in civic movements is not new in Nigeria’s democratic space.
However, others pushed back sharply, arguing that widespread hardship, inflation, and insecurity are the real drivers of public demonstrations.
One user on X, @NaijaCitizenX, dismissed the claim, saying it downplays genuine frustrations faced by ordinary citizens across the country.
The debate has since intensified discussions about the credibility of protests in Nigeria and the growing distrust between citizens, political actors, and civic movements.
