Flash Flood Horror in Laos Cave: One Survivor Rescued as Divers Pause Mission to Save Four Others

A dramatic rescue operation deep inside a flooded cave in Laos has successfully brought one trapped villager to safety after more than a week underground, while emergency crews race against time to save four others still stranded in dangerous conditions.

The multinational rescue mission was temporarily suspended late Friday night after exhausted divers spent hours navigating narrow underwater passages and steep cave tunnels in a bid to evacuate the survivors safely.

Rescuers confirmed that operations will resume at 9 a.m. local time on Saturday.

The trapped men were discovered huddled together in a dark chamber located more than 800 feet from the cave entrance after flash floods suddenly cut off escape routes inside the remote cave system. Two additional people believed to have entered the cave remain missing.

CNN, reporting directly from the rescue scene, said divers could be heard shouting, “They are coming out,” during one of the evacuation attempts, moments before the first survivor emerged safely after nine days underground.

Despite signs that the stranded villagers remain mentally alert, rescuers say the men are battling severe hunger and growing exhaustion after surviving for days in darkness surrounded by muddy floodwaters.

The operation has proven extremely dangerous due to the cave’s harsh terrain and rapidly changing water levels. The entrance slopes downward at a sharp 45-degree angle, forcing divers to guide survivors through tight flooded sections with limited visibility.

A Thai diving group assisting in the rescue confirmed on social media that the remaining four survivors were “not yet ready to be evacuated” before the mission was paused for the night.

“Rescue teams have pulled out for the night. The remaining four survivors are not yet ready to be evacuated,” the statement read.

Authorities say teams will spend the night reviewing rescue strategies and assessing conditions inside the cave before attempting another extraction at daybreak.

The unfolding operation has drawn international attention and renewed memories of past high-risk cave rescues that captured global headlines, as families anxiously wait for news of the remaining survivors and the two missing individuals.
