The German Embassy in Nigeria has warned visa applicants against falling victim to fraudsters who promise guaranteed visa approvals, faster appointments or special connections with embassy officials.
In a series of advisories published on its official X account on Wednesday, the German Missions in Abuja and Lagos stressed that they do not work with visa agents and that information about visa requirements and application procedures is freely available through official government websites.
“We do not work with any ‘Visa Agents’!” the embassy declared, urging applicants to disregard claims by third parties and contact the mission directly for clarification.
The warning comes amid concerns about fraudulent intermediaries who allegedly demand large sums of money, sometimes running into millions of naira, in exchange for promises of secured jobs, visas or preferential access to appointments.
According to the mission, visa decisions are made by the relevant German authorities based on applicants’ eligibility and supporting documents, not payments to intermediaries claiming to have special influence.
The embassy also disclosed that it had received reports from applicants who paid substantial fees to agents promising jobs and visas, only to discover that the offers were false. It emphasised that appointments booked through official channels are free and applicants should not pay anyone simply to secure a slot.
The German Missions further cautioned applicants against sending documents by email in an attempt to obtain appointments or relying on unofficial guidance about the Consular Services Portal. The portal currently applies only to certain long-stay, or national, visa categories.
Applicants have been advised to use official German government websites, including nigeria.diplo.de and digital.diplo.de/visa, to obtain accurate information, identify the correct visa category for their intended travel and follow the prescribed application procedures.
The embassy also urged Nigerians with questions about their applications to contact the relevant mission directly rather than relying on unverified information from third parties.
The advisory forms part of the German Missions’ efforts to combat visa-related misinformation, discourage fraudulent practices and protect Nigerian applicants from financial losses.
