Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal and 14 other governorship candidates have signed a peace accord aimed at promoting peaceful political activities and ensuring order ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The agreement was signed at a Peace Accord and Election Security Summit organised by the Zamfara State Police Command in Gusau, the state capital.

The ceremony brought together political contestants ahead of the elections, with participants pledging not to engage in activities capable of disrupting the electoral process before, during or after the polls.

According to the report, candidates contesting governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly seats were invited to sign the accord as part of efforts to encourage peaceful participation among political parties.

Governor Lawal, identified in the report as a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), signed the agreement and called for peace and credible elections. Other participating political parties also endorsed the accord.

Addressing the gathering, Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Mohammed Bello Daga, urged all candidates to respect electoral laws and avoid actions that could undermine the process.

Daga warned that political aspirants or party members found violating the law would face legal action, stressing that the police would not tolerate conduct capable of threatening electoral peace.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police in the state, Kabir Abdul Randawa, also assured political parties and residents of the command’s commitment to providing adequate security and protecting peaceful political activities.

Randawa urged candidates and political parties to shun intimidation, violence and other actions capable of creating tension or endangering lives during the election period.

The signing of the accord comes amid preparations for the 2027 general elections, with security agencies and political stakeholders seeking to prevent violence and promote a peaceful electoral environment.
