South Africa erupted in celebration before sunrise on Thursday after Bafana Bafana secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds for the first time in the nation’s history.
The landmark achievement came after South Africa stunned South Korea with a hard-fought 1-0 victory, sealing qualification from the group stage and sparking wild scenes of jubilation across the country.
Few had predicted the turnaround after Bafana Bafana suffered a 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in their opening match. However, the team responded impressively, delivering a disciplined performance that secured a place in the next round and ignited national pride.
As the final whistle sounded around 5:00 a.m. local time, residents poured into the streets of cities and townships, waving flags, singing victory songs and sounding vuvuzelas. Many joined the celebrations in their pyjamas as fireworks lit up the sky.
In Soweto, one of South Africa’s most iconic townships, supporters danced in the streets and sang “Shosholoza,” a traditional sporting anthem that has become synonymous with national unity and sporting success.
Nandi Ntini, a resident of Soweto, said the celebrations began immediately after the match. According to her, the sound of vuvuzelas and fireworks echoed through the neighbourhood for more than an hour as fans marked the historic achievement.
Videos shared online showed emotional supporters chanting, dancing and expressing confidence that the team could continue its remarkable World Cup journey. Many described the qualification as a proud moment for South African football and a symbol of national resilience.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also congratulated the team, praising what he described as an inspired performance. He said the victory had united the country behind a shared dream and renewed hope for further success in the tournament.
The achievement marks a significant milestone for Bafana Bafana, who are competing in a World Cup for the first time since South Africa hosted the tournament in 2010. With momentum building and the nation firmly behind them, attention now turns to the knockout stage and whether the team can continue its fairytale run.
