House of Reps Summons Service Chiefs, NSA Ribadu Over Rising Insecurity Across Nigeria

Nigeria’s worsening security crisis has again come under intense scrutiny as the House of Representatives on Tuesday summoned the country’s service chiefs and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to appear before lawmakers over the escalating wave of violence across the country.

The move followed growing concerns over persistent attacks by bandits and terrorists, particularly in northern parts of the country, where killings, kidnappings and raids on communities have continued despite ongoing military operations.

The resolution was adopted during plenary after lawmakers considered a motion sponsored by Sulaiman Gumi, who represents the Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State in the House of Representatives.

During the debate, lawmakers expressed alarm over the increasing insecurity affecting several states, warning that the situation now poses a serious threat to national stability, economic activities and the safety of ordinary Nigerians.

The parliament’s decision comes amid renewed public outrage over repeated attacks on communities, highways and rural settlements, with many Nigerians questioning the effectiveness of current security strategies being implemented by the Federal Government.

In recent months, bandit groups and terrorist factions have intensified operations in parts of Zamfara, Kaduna, Niger, Sokoto, Benue and Borno states, leading to fresh calls for urgent reforms within the country’s security architecture.

The National Assembly’s summons is expected to compel the security chiefs to brief lawmakers on ongoing military operations, intelligence efforts and measures being taken to address the growing insecurity nationwide.

The development also comes as pressure mounts on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to review the performance of the country’s security leadership. Several groups and political stakeholders have recently called for the replacement of some service chiefs, arguing that fresh strategies and leadership may be needed to tackle the crisis more effectively.

Although the presidency has yet to officially respond to the latest calls, Tuesday’s action by the House signals increasing concern within government circles over the country’s deteriorating security situation.
