The long-running debate over the future of James Bond has taken another turn after Idris Elba said the iconic spy franchise should avoid becoming “woke” and remain true to its roots as pure escapist entertainment.
Speaking in an interview with GQ, the British actor addressed years of speculation linking him to the role of 007, even though he has repeatedly denied being in contention to replace Daniel Craig.
Elba admitted he was flattered by the widespread fan support urging producers to cast him as Bond, but suggested that not every audience around the world would embrace the idea of a Black actor taking on the famous role.
“Bond was written how he was written for a reason,” Elba said, adding that while he appreciated the conversation around diversity, some global markets “won’t go for a black male, an African male, playing Bond.”
The actor argued that the franchise works best when it focuses on entertainment rather than trying to reflect every social or political debate.
“Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke,” he said. “You’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism.”
Elba’s comments are already sparking heated reactions online, especially among fans who have long campaigned for the actor to become the first Black James Bond. Others, however, agree with his view that the character’s identity should remain largely unchanged.
The actor also joked about his latest movie role in Masters of the Universe, where he plays Man-At-Arms — a character originally depicted as a white man with a ginger moustache in the 1980s animated series.
“Man-At-Arms could be any colour! He’s got green legs, for God’s sake!” Elba joked during the interview.
The discussion comes as the search for the next James Bond officially intensifies following Craig’s departure from the franchise after No Time to Die. Rumours continue to swirl around several actors believed to be in contention for one of Hollywood’s most coveted roles.
